There is sometimes confusion between the terms project management and program management.
Essentially, Projects are concerned with outputs and Programmes are concerned with outcomes.
A project is a temporary, scheduled, usually short-lived undertaking with specific time constraints to create a unique product or service and a programme is comprised of multiple projects usually related to one another, created to obtain broad organisational, strategic or technical objectives.
A project is designed to deliver an output or deliverable and its success will be in terms of delivering the right output at the right time and to the right cost.
Examples of projects could be:-
Groups of projects (Programmes) are managed in order to drive essential investments and change.
Programme Managers deal with Project Managers, as well as upper management/high profile stakeholders.
Programme Management includes management of projects which, together, improve the performance of the organisation. A programme's success will be measured in terms of benefits.
Benefits are the measures of improvement of an organisation and might include increased income, increased profits, decreased costs, reduced wastage or environmental damage and more satisfied customers. In central or local government organisations benefits might include providing a better service to the community.
Whilst project management techniques and methods have long been a feature of industries such as engineering, these approaches are now widely applied across all types of organisations. Projects are often used to manage initiatives which span the traditional functional silos which exist in most organisations.
Project Managers will have many interfaces within an organisation - not least with the various stakeholders, including those who have sponsored the initiative.
Where there are multiple, simultaneous projects, Project Lifecycle Services can set up a PMO or Project Support Office to share specialist resources, and assist with routine project tasks.
